Akon has just finalized a major agreement with the Senegalese government to build the first African 'crypto-city' in Senegal to be deployed by 2025.
The plan is to launch 'Akon Crypto City', the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified Senegalese city on a 2,000 acre site donated to Akon by Senegalese President Macky Sall.
The city is expected to be solar powered and sustainable without the need for a power grid thanks to Akon Lighting Africa, which is a major asset for its futuristic city.
A project in different phases in 2019
Akon City is to be developed in phases. The second phase will begin in 2025 and Akon has stated that it could be completed within 10 years.
The city's original plans were announced in 2018 and construction of the project began in 2019.
According to a November interview on radio station Power 106, Akon said:
'It's a 10-year construction component, so we're doing it in stages. We started the construction in March 2019 and the second stage will be in 2025.'
According to Akoin's website, the beta platform will be launched soon.
It is the foundation of the Akoin team's three-part vision to empower 'aspiring entrepreneurs to use real digital tools and services to enable brands to unleash the power of Africa's booming economy'.
The saviour of Africa
Since retiring from his musical career in 2010, Akon has worked on commercial and philanthropic projects across Africa. His most recent project is Akon Lighting Africa, a solar energy company that has installed infrastructure in 14 countries. He spent much of his childhood in Dakar, Senegal, which he calls his 'home town'.
The singer and music producer Akon also talks about the world's first 'Crypto City' in 2025, a futuristic city in Senegal that will have its own digital currency.
The first 'Crypto City' will only use Akoin cryptocurrency.
Akon said:
'I think this blockchain technology and this cryptocurrency could be the savior of Africa in many ways. Because they give power back to the people and bring security back into the monetary system and also allow the people to use it in a way that they can move forward and not let the government do what is holding them back'.
The people of the new city will use Akoin to develop the city's economy. In 2018, Akon said that the citizens of the city could 'use it in such a way that they can progress themselves and not let the government do what hinders them'.
According to SkyNews, the new city, which would be located a short drive from Dakar, should include houses, shops, parks, universities, schools and even its own stadium.
